Cumilla’s ‘Bagha Sharif’ Secures Hat-Trick at 117th Jabbarer Boli Khela

Cumilla’s Md. Sharif, popularly known as ‘Bagha Sharif,’ clinched his third consecutive title at the 117th edition of the traditional Abdul Jabbar Memorial Boli Khela, marking a remarkable hat-trick victory.

The thrilling final took place on Saturday at the historic Laldighi Maidan, where Sharif defeated his long-time rival Rashed in a fiercely contested bout.

The match, which lasted around 24 minutes, showcased intense competition from the outset. Demonstrating a blend of strength and technique, Bagha Sharif ultimately secured the win after a closely fought battle.

Notably, Sharif and Rashed had also faced each other in the finals of 2024 and 2025, with Sharif emerging victorious on both occasions while Rashed finished as runner-up. This year’s result continued that trend.

The competition began at 3 pm, featuring 108 wrestlers from across the country. At the end of the event, prizes and crests were awarded to the winners by Md. Abu Sufian, Member of Parliament from Chattogram-9, and Ashraful Md. Amin. The title sponsor of this year’s event was Banglalink.

The event was inaugurated by Hasan Md. Shawkat Ali, Commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police. Among others present were BNP leader Abul Hashem Bakkar, CMP Additional Commissioner Wahidul Haque Chowdhury, and Deputy Commissioner (South) Hossain Mohammad Kabir Bhuiyan, along with members of the organizing committee. The competition officially began with a balloon release ceremony.

Laldighi Maidan and its surrounding areas were packed with spectators throughout the day. Despite the intense heat, the crowd remained enthusiastic, with rhythmic drumbeats adding to the festive atmosphere.

The historic Boli Khela was introduced in 1909 by Abdul Jabbar Saudagar of Bakshirhat to strengthen the youth physically and mentally during the anti-British movement. This year marked the 117th edition of the event.

A Boishakhi fair held around the Laldighi area alongside the wrestling competition also attracted large crowds, featuring bustling marketplaces, food stalls, and various entertainment activities.
