Bangladesh reach 96-2 at lunch in a cautious start to opening Test

Opener Shadman Islam led the charge as Bangladesh reached 96-2 at lunch on Day 1 of the opening Test against West Indies at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium today.

Shadman showed a hunger to occupy the crease against a disciplined West Indies attack after Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto opted to bat first.

Bangladesh are seeking a victory to boost their chance to reach the World Test Championship (WTC) final for the first time.

At the first interval of the day, Shadman was batting on 42 with Shanto on 15 at the crease.

West Indies new ball bowlers Jayden Seals and Shamar Joseph got into the groove immediately after Bangladesh came into batting. They bowled in some probing channels to leave Shadman and his fellow opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim in discomfort.

The relentless attack paid dividends when Tanzid finally fell into the trap, driving a delivery outside of the stump and edging to second slip as he was on 7.

But Shadman resisted his urge to drive anything outside of the off stump to keep his wicket intact against a disciplined Seals and Joseph.

He and Mominul, who showed the same patience, denied West Indies pacers to keep the runs flowing.

However, a moment of distraction cost Mominul as he sliced a tossed-up delivery off left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican straight to mid-off, ending a 59-run partnership with Shadman.

Mominul, by the time, scored 28 off 51, including two fours.

Shadman and Shanto later saw out the session without further trouble, negotiating the visiting bowlers astutely.
