Industrial police to work in coordination with BGMEA for stability in industrial zones: SP Mahmuda

Newly appointed Superintendent of Police (SP) of Chattogram Industrial Police-3, Mahmuda Begum has emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts with BGMEA to maintain stability in industrial areas and ensure harmonious relations between workers and factory owners.

She said mutual cooperation and coordination are essential to successfully address any unexpected situation in industrial zones.

She said workers' issues should be resolved within factory premises and that all concerned must remain cautious to prevent public suffering under any circumstances.

She made these remarks at an exchange of views and reception program held at the BGMEA building in Chattogram on Wednesday.

During the event, BGMEA leaders warmly welcomed SP Mahmuda Begum with floral greetings. In her response, Mahmuda Begum thanked BGMEA and garment industry owners in Chattogram for the reception and assured continued support from the Industrial Police in maintaining peace and discipline in the industrial sector.

BGMEA First Vice President Selim Rahman said that ahead of the upcoming holy Eid-ul-Azha, salary payments for workers in most garment factories in Chattogram have already been completed, while the remaining factories are in the process of disbursing payments promptly.

He said, despite various challenges related to banking complexities, bonds, and customs issues, no entrepreneur wants any problems regarding workers’ wages and bonuses. BGMEA member factories are being regularly monitored regarding salary-bonus payments and potential labor unrest, he added.

Selim Rahman further mentioned that in previous years, no law-and-order deterioration occurred in Chattogram’s garment factories over Eid-related salary and bonus payments.

He expressed optimism that a peaceful environment would prevail this year as well through the combined efforts of all stakeholders.

BGMEA Vice President Mohammad Rafiq Chowdhury said, the garment industry in Chattogram is currently enjoying a peaceful atmosphere. He noted that this stability has been maintained through the coordinated efforts of workers, factory owners, the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments, the Department of Labour, Chattogram Metropolitan Police, Industrial Police, intelligence agencies, BGMEA, BKMEA, BEPZA, and other relevant stakeholders.

He also said that the Industrial Police and BGMEA are jointly monitoring the situation in industrial areas and working to ensure timely payment of workers’ rightful dues.

Among others present at the program were BGMEA Director MD M Mohiuddin Chowdhury, Saif Ullah Mansur, Sakif Ahmed Salam, Rakibul Alam Chowdhury, former Director and Chairman of the Standing Committee on Insurance Affairs Md. Emdadul Haque Chowdhury, Chairman of the Membership Standing Committee Odud Mohammad Chowdhury, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Religious Affairs Kazi Md.
