The week-long ‘36 July Rangpur Divisional Theatre Festival 2026’ is underway in Rangpur, bringing together theatre groups and enthusiasts from across the region. Organised by the Rangpur Theatre Forum, the festival is being held from August 8 to 14, featuring a variety of theatrical productions.
As one of the festival’s major attractions, the acclaimed solo play ‘Vasane Ujan’, produced by Dhaka-based Vivekananda Theatre, will be staged at 7:00pm on Thursday, August 13, at the Shilpakala Academy Auditorium in Rangpur.
Based on Fyodor Dostoevsky’s short story The Gentle Spirit, the play has been adapted by Apurba Kumar Kundu and directed by Subhashish Dutta Tanmoy. Acclaimed actor Md. Ershad Hasan will perform as the sole actor throughout the production.
The play explores the turmoil of the human mind, loneliness, love, relationship complexities and the existential crises of life. Through voice, physical expression, emotion and nuanced acting, the lone performer creates an expansive theatrical world within the limited space of the stage.
Produced by Vivekananda Theatre, Vasane Ujan has already received appreciation from audiences at several venues. The Rangpur show will mark the 10th staging of the production, adding significance to its presentation at the divisional theatre festival.
The creative collaboration between director Subhashish Dutta Tanmoy and actor Md. Ershad Hasan is also regarded as one of the production’s key strengths. Despite being a solo performance, the play seeks to present a multidimensional portrayal of human emotions, relationships and inner conflicts.
The organisers hope the festival will inject fresh energy into Rangpur’s cultural scene while strengthening interaction between theatre practitioners and audiences. The week-long event is expected to create a lively platform for theatre practice and cultural exchange in the region.
