Supporters of BNP leader Md. Jakir Faraji staged a series of intense protests, including a human chain and a two-hour road blockade, demanding his unconditional release. The demonstration, held on Wednesday, paralyzed the Bhola–Charfassion regional highway, causing significant distress to long-distance commuters and students heading to examination centers.
The protest began around 10:30 AM with a human chain in the Banglabazar area of Bhola town. As the crowd grew, demonstrators moved onto the Bhola–Charfassion regional highway, where they set fire to tires and erected barricades. The resulting blockade created miles of traffic congestion on both sides of the artery, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded.
The unrest follows an operation by the Coast Guard at the Ilisha launch ghat. Acting on confidential information, personnel raided the Dhaka-bound Karnaphuli-13 launch and detained Md. Jakir Hossain (Faraji).
According to official statements from the Coast Guard, a locally made firearm, ammunition, and a quantity of cannabis were recovered from his possession. Authorities identified Jakir as a resident of the Koralia Khayerhat area under Bhola Sadar Upazila, alleging his involvement in various criminal activities and citing several pending cases against him. He was subsequently handed over to the Bhola Sadar Police Station.
However, Jakir Faraji’s supporters have vehemently denied these allegations. During the protest, speakers claimed that Jakir is entirely innocent and has been "falsely implicated" in a pre-planned conspiracy. They warned of further programs if his unconditional release is not secured immediately.
The two-hour standstill caused immense hardship for the general public. Examinees, in particular, were seen struggling to reach their centers on time as transport remained halted until noon.
The situation was brought under control after police intervened and successfully dispersed the protesters. While traffic movement has since returned to normal, local authorities remain on high alert. Law enforcement agencies continue to patrol the area to prevent any further escalation of tension.
