Authorities have decided to temporarily relocate the crocodile from the pond adjacent to the shrine of Hazrat Khan Jahan Ali (Rh.) in Bagerhat to ensure public safety.
The decision was taken following recent incidents that have heightened concerns among local residents and visitors.
The decision was announced by Bagerhat Deputy Commissioner Golam Md. Baten after an emergency meeting held on Tuesday night at the Deputy Commissioner's conference room.
Officials from the district administration, the Forest Department, law enforcement agencies, the shrine management authority and other relevant departments attended the meeting.
According to officials, the crocodile will be transferred from the historic shrine pond to the Karamjal Wildlife Breeding Center in the Sundarbans with technical support from the Forest Department.
"We have prioritized public safety in light of recent incidents and decided to relocate the crocodile to a secure location," said Deputy Commissioner Golam Md. Baten. "All necessary measures will be taken in coordination with the Forest Department."
Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, Divisional Forest Officer of the Bagerhat East Sundarbans Division, said a team of wildlife experts from Khulna is scheduled to arrive in Bagerhat on Wednesday to oversee the relocation process.
"The expert team will assess the crocodile's location and behaviour before determining the appropriate capture method, timing and other technical requirements," he said.
The decision comes amid growing public concern following an incident in which a young girl, Fatema Akter, was attacked by the crocodile while bathing in the shrine pond.
The incident triggered anxiety among residents and visitors, prompting renewed calls for stronger safety measures around the pond and the crocodile.
Authorities said the relocation is intended as a precautionary measure to prevent further incidents while ensuring the animal's welfare under professional supervision.
