As part of the government's nationwide initiative to plant 250 million trees over five years, Chattogram Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (CWASA) has launched a tree plantation programme aimed at promoting environmental conservation, combating the adverse impacts of climate change, and creating a greener and more livable Bangladesh.
The programme was inaugurated on Saturday at CWASA’s Nasirabad Reservoir and Booster Station. Managing Director Engineer Selim Md. Jane Alam formally launched the campaign by planting a mango sapling, highlighting the importance of expanding green coverage in urban areas.
According to CWASA officials, the organization has been assigned a target of planting around 3,200 trees within the next 180 days under the national afforestation programme. However, the authority has taken an initiative to complete the plantation activities well ahead of schedule, with plans to plant all designated saplings at various CWASA facilities across Chattogram within the next two months.
Following the inauguration, senior officials, including the Deputy Managing Director (Administration and Finance), participated in planting saplings of different species. Speakers at the event emphasized the vital role of trees in maintaining ecological balance, preserving biodiversity, reducing environmental pollution, and enhancing urban greenery.
The programme was attended by CWASA’s Deputy Managing Director (Administration and Finance), Commercial Manager, Chief Engineer, Superintending Engineer, Executive Engineers, Public Relations Officer, and officials and employees from different departments of the organization.
The initiative reflects CWASA’s commitment to supporting the national climate agenda and contributing to sustainable environmental management through increased tree coverage across its operational areas.
