Eight held over Awami League flash procession in Dhanmondi

Police have arrested seven leaders of the Awami League's women's wing and a microbus driver during a flash procession in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi.

Assistant Commissioner Shah Mustafa Tariquzzaman of the DMP’s Dhanmondi Zone said the arrests were made around 6:15am on Friday.

Around 20 to 25 women brought out a procession in front of Star Kabab restaurant on Road No. 2 at dawn, according to him. Carrying banners and placards reading “Mujib Premik Banglar Narira” (Mujib-loving women of Bangladesh), they marched towards Road No. 3 while chanting slogans.

A patrol team reached the spot after receiving information about the procession, said Tariquzzaman. The group dispersed and attempted to flee when police arrived.

Seven women were detained at the scene. Police also seized the Hiace microbus used to transport them and arrested its driver.

A case has been filed against the detainees under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Dhanmondi Police Station, the officer said.
