Civil society calls for reforms to achieve 10,000 MW solar target by 2030

Civil society representatives have called for policy reforms, tax relief and a one-stop service to help Bangladesh achieve its target of generating 10,000 MW of solar power by 2030.

The call came at a press briefing held on Monday at the National Press Club in Dhaka, jointly organised by ActionAid Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Sustainable and Renewable Energy Association (BSREA) and the Just Energy Transition Network Bangladesh (JETnet-BD).

Speakers said the target is ambitious but achievable with the right technology, adequate financing and strong political commitment.

They stressed that reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels and expanding domestic solar energy is the most effective solution to the country’s ongoing power crisis.

Energy expert Dr Ijaz Hossain said integrating 10,000 MW of solar power into the national grid could significantly reduce spending on LNG and coal imports.

Experts highlighted the potential of agrovoltaics, rooftop solar installations, grid modernisation and battery storage systems to meet the target.

BSREA President Mostafa Al Mahmud urged the government to reduce import duties on solar equipment and introduce a fast-track one-stop service for investors.

Climate finance expert M Zakir Hossain Khan called for redirecting a portion of fossil fuel subsidies toward renewable energy development.

Speakers also emphasised the need for an inclusive and just energy transition involving marginalised communities, women, farmers and small entrepreneurs.

They concluded that the 2030 target is technically achievable if supported by a coordinated roadmap and the removal of bureaucratic barriers.
