As part of the government's election manifesto commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development, the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) has launched a special greening initiative under the nationwide programme to plant and maintain 25 crore trees over the next five years.
Under the initiative, trees and ornamental plants will be planted in all vacant areas under the port's jurisdiction. The programme aims to transform the port into a greener and more environmentally friendly facility while contributing to climate change mitigation and ecological sustainability.
The plantation programme was officially inaugurated on Thursday by Rear Admiral S. M. Moniruzzaman, Chairman of the Chittagong Port Authority, through the planting of flower saplings in front of the newly constructed state-of-the-art One Stop Service Center at the port.
Speaking after the inauguration, the CPA Chairman said, "We are committed to building a green and environmentally sustainable port. To support the government's target of planting 250 million trees, every vacant space within the port area will gradually be brought under greenery. Our focus is not only on planting saplings but also on ensuring their proper care and maintenance so they can grow successfully."
He said that environmental conservation is one of the most pressing challenges of the present time. Through this greening initiative, the port aims to reduce carbon emissions, preserve biodiversity, and ensure a healthier environment for future generations.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by members of the CPA Board, heads of various departments, and senior officials of the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA).
According to the port authority, the greening project will play a significant role in maintaining ecological balance, addressing the impacts of climate change, and creating a healthier, greener, and more pleasant environment in and around the port. The initiative is also expected to contribute to the successful implementation of the government's sustainable and environment-friendly development agenda.
