Two brothers drowned in water while visiting various houses in Nazirpur

Two brothers drowned in a canal while visiting their maternal uncle's house in Nazirpur upazila of Pirojpur. The incident took place at around 1 pm on Wednesday (May 13) in Choto Amtala village of Nazirpur union no. 6 of the upazila.

The deceased children are named Abdur Rahman (6) and Abu Bakkar (4). They are the two sons of Md. Miraj Sheikh of Bharatkathi village of Daihari union of neighboring Nesarabad upazila.

It was learned from talking to the police and local people that the two deceased brothers had come with their mother from Bharatkathi village of Daihari union of Nesarabad upazila to visit their maternal uncle's house in Amtala village of Nazirpur Sadar union of Nazirpur upazila two days ago. They had been playing with their mother since this morning. At their maternal uncle's house, elder brother Abdur Rahman (6) helped his mother by pumping water from a tube.

It is learned that there was an old canal nearby that was dug by the government a few days ago. The canal was very deep. That is where they had drunk while bathing with their mother yesterday. Out of greed, the two brothers went missing in the nearby canal around 1 pm, bypassing their mother. The family members did not find them even after searching for them. At one stage, their bodies were found floating in the government-cut canal in front of the house.

Nazirpur Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Md. Russell Sikder said that it is believed that one of them fell into the newly cut canal due to negligence and the other drowned while trying to rescue him.

Nazirpur Upazila Health Complex's emergency department doctor Snigdha Mitra said that when the two children who fell into the water were brought to our hospital, they were dead.

Nazirpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Tariqul Islam said that the police visited the scene after receiving information about the accident. In view of the family's request, permission has been given to bury the body without an autopsy.
