Couple in Nandigram Moved by Prime Minister’s Gift

A poor Jubo Dal worker’s family in Nandigram, Bogura, had been suffering from an acute water crisis for a long time. Due to financial hardship, Rakib-Sharmin couple could not afford to install a tube well. They had to depend on neighboring houses for drinking water, but eventually even the neighbors became unwilling to help.

The Upazila Jubo Dal came forward after learning about the plight of the underprivileged family in Ranbagha Bazar area. Financial assistance was provided on behalf of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Chairman of BNP, and temporary measures were taken to address the water crisis until a tube well could be installed.

On Tuesday (June 23), a video highlighting the humanitarian work of Jubo Dal went viral on social media. Earlier, on Monday afternoon, Abdur Rauf Rubel, Senior Joint Convener of Nandigram Upazila Jubo Dal, visited the residence of the poor party worker. Rakibul Islam Rakib and his wife Sharmin Khatun expressed their gratitude and became emotional after receiving the support.

Local residents said that the family had long depended on neighboring houses for water. However, they often faced humiliation and unpleasant remarks while collecting drinking water. Following disputes, neighbors eventually stopped providing water.

The family had been enduring this hardship for nearly three years, while no one in the locality had taken any effective steps to solve the problem permanently.

Jubo Dal leader Abdur Rauf Rubel came forward to support the disadvantaged family. According to locals, he regularly extends humanitarian assistance to party activists and needy people in times of crisis, and they believe the public would benefit even more if he became an elected representative.

Sharmin Khatun, wife of Rakib, said that receiving the Prime Minister’s gift had brought relief from their suffering. Only those who struggle financially can understand how important a tube well is for a family, she said.

Meanwhile, after learning about the family's water crisis, the Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) has initiated steps to address the issue.Discussions are underway to allocate a twin-pit latrine under the National Sanitation Project along with a tube well. This information was confirmed by Md. Golam Kibria, Executive Engineer of the Department of Public Health Engineering in Bogura.
