Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has urged drivers to refrain from reckless and risky overtaking to ensure safe movement on roads and highways. As part of efforts to facilitate safe and comfortable travel for passengers during Eid-ul-Azha, the authority conducted an awareness campaign across several areas of Chattogram city.
The daylong campaign was carried out on Sunday in Alankar, A.K. Khan, Bahaddarhat, New Chandgaon Police Station area, and New Bridge. The drive was led by BRTA Chattogram Division Director (Engineering) Md. Masud Alam. Among others present were Deputy Director (Engineering) of Chattogram Metro Circle-2 Md. Sanaul Haque, Assistant Director (Engineering) of the District Circle Uthoyainu Chowdhury, and other BRTA officials.
Although no fines were imposed during the campaign, drivers, helpers, supervisors, and transport-related personnel were provided with awareness guidelines on road safety measures and accident prevention.
BRTA officials advised drivers to ensure adequate rest before driving, avoid overconfidence and excessive speed, refrain from reckless and dangerous overtaking, and never operate vehicles while under the influence of drugs, under mental stress or in poor physical condition. They also emphasized compliance with traffic laws and road signs and instructed drivers not to pick up or drop off passengers at unauthorized locations.
Helpers and supervisors were urged to maintain courteous behavior toward passengers, avoid carrying passengers on bus rooftops, refrain from transporting passengers beyond the designated seating capacity, and stop boarding or dropping passengers from moving vehicles. They were also encouraged to play a responsible role in ensuring safe transportation services.
Meanwhile, transport counter managers were instructed to implement government-approved fares, maintain scheduled operations, prevent the movement of unfit vehicles, and regularly monitor drivers and assistants to ensure adequate rest and safer journeys.
BRTA officials said such awareness activities will continue after Eid-ul-Azha to help reduce road accidents and ensure safe, smooth, and uninterrupted travel for passengers.
